The Paradox of Change.
In the build up to the 2015 Presidential Election of Nigeria, my younger brother, Jeff was perhaps the most passionate supporter of the then candidate of All Progressives Congress, APC, General Muhhamadu Buhari, who is now addressed as President Muhammadu Buhari.
It was not just him; every member of my immediate Family with the exception of my Mother was almost driven to the point of fanaticism in their support for Buhari; Jeff in particular took the pains of reading Buhari's biography and his committed support for Buhari was surprising to me, at least for his age.
Well, it's almost 16 months since General Buhari became President Buhari and Jeff has become critical of him and his performance.
Of course, that's the way it should be! When the Government is underperforming, it is only normal for us as citizens to complain and criticize.
Without a doubt, the President has let a good number of us who supported him down!
This is hard to admit but in all honesty, even the most passionate Buharists like me have resigned to fate in the hope that somehow, the President will not disappoint us.
But if the President's tenure elapses today, he would have performed worse than his much maligned successor.
I'm only human and I am truly disappointed; the promise of a better Nigeria is fading into thin air; the promise of a better economy is virtually nonexistent as Nigeria is officially in a recession; my pocket money barely lasts; the price of basic foodstuffs has skyrocketed!
Really, this is not the Change I argued so passionately about with my Friends.
However, in my most lucid state, I wouldn't express the opinions above.
Armed with the necessary statistics, I can't blame the President for the sour change we are witnessing here.
The truth is that most of us who passionately supported Buhari failed to understand the "CHANGE".
sorry, I even feel that those who promised "CHANGE" lack a basic understanding of the idea of "CHANGE".
"Change" means a departure from the norm.
It means Transparency in Government.
It means that you would have to earn every money you will spend.
It means that being a Government official does not automatically mean a life devoid of financial difficulties.
"Change" means an end to impunity.
"Change" means a ruthless war against corruption.
For those of us who were passionate in our support for Buhari during the elections, "Did you really expect Magic? ".
Buhari inherited a sick country and we can only complain because the "Sick" country he inherited is in "Intensive Care".
Change takes time.
The President is not a magician.
If you truly supported him in 2015 because of the qualities you saw in him, you should trust him enough not to write him off so soon.
Change takes time and I trust that in due time, the fruits of the Change we all voted for will begin to manifest.
For those who promised us Heaven and Earth, I hope you survive the burden of expectation that you have placed on yourselves.
I still trust and believe that you were not making empty promises during the campaigns but you must understand and epitomize the change you promised us.
You must embody anti-corruption!
You must embody diversification which you now preach!
You must embody austerity.
Above all, you must deliver on your promises.
For those who see nothing good in this Government, I really understand with you but the best you can do is to watch the turn of events and contribute your own quota in terms of constructive criticisms, knowing fully we that the performance of the the Government, whether good or bad will affect every Nigerian.
In the end, I will conclude by saying that CHANGE IS DIFFICULT BUT NOT CHANGING IS FATAL!
This is objective... I like this. Personally,I believe we would have been worse off if the past administration had been allowed to continue... Let's watch tho... This is democracy after all.
ReplyDeleteMy views exactly!
DeleteCertainly Nigerians would always complain. but like I always cry out like a "voice in the wilderness" on issues such as this, we all must endeavor to play out part in the rebirth of this Nation.

ReplyDeleteI concur with your submission. Not changing is indeed fatal.
ReplyDeleteThere is still hope.
Great one once again... every Nigerian should see this axiom.

DeleteWe already 2 years into his reign... There is really nothing to hope for again... By next year, campaign begins again.. any change we see between now and then would be marginal. Let's just sit back and watch, but just know that time is going... And very fast!
