Which Way, Nigeria?

Aye!
Another one:
Another opportunity
And we don't even hesitate to display our madness.
As always, we've shown ourselves as a people with utter disregard and disrespect for the law and human dignity.
The society we live in sickens me: a society that believes so much in oppressing the helpless at the expense of the powerful.
A society that protects her rapists and oppressors but would suppress the helpless and the poor at every opportunity!
Most frustratingly, a society with a short term memory: a society that is so quick to forgive and forget her woes.
It's either we've all seen it or we will soon see it: the disgusting sight of a human being being burnt to death for "stealing" Garri or whatever.
We can condemn it all we want but the truth is that deep down, we have this uncommon obsession with the idea of jungle justice.
We are quick to condemn without giving room for the accused party to defend themselves but that is only one part of the story: the truth is that we are willing to exhaust every possible opportunity to ensure that the big criminals are treated fairly but the moment we hear that a small time petty thief is caught, our sense of very quick Judgement is aroused.
The structural imbalance in our society is all too glaring: some four years ago, four undergraduates of the University of Port Harcourt were brutally murdered by a mob for their complicity in the theft of mobile phones and other accessories.
And then Yesterday or so, a seven year old boy was allegedly burnt to death for stealing Garri: some have come out to say that the thief was not seven and that he was not killed for stealing Garri but the most important thing is that a human being was brutally murdered by members of the society.
Whether he was seven or not: whether he stole Garri or not, the truth is that no human being deserves to be subjected to such inhumane treatment.
Time and again, we've proven ourselves as a society with complete disregard for the poor!
Of course, never in the history of mob actions in Nigeria has a big thief ever been made to go through the pain of jungle justice: it has always been the small thieves being set on fire with tires hanging over their necks while the big thieves are honored with exalted positions in the Church and the society at large.
How sick can a people be?
We celebrate the ones who's thievery has left us without stable power supply: the ones who's incompetence has left our economy in shambles, our educational system, defective and our graduates unemployed.
We confer them with national honours and awards while the Preachers use them as good examples in their bromidic gospels.
Without mincing words, we are a society of hypocrites!
We thrive in disorder and corruption and we will remain so for as long as we refuse to treat all crimes with the condemnation they deserve.
Finally, I don't expect us to still talk about the jungle justice that was meted out on the small time thief in the next one week: we are good and forgiving like that.
In the meantime, Rest in Peace to all those who have been victims of quick street "justice" and to those who feed fat on our collective wealth, thunder fire you all!
