In his lifetime, Ken Saro Wiwa led the struggle against the degradation of Ogoni land, as a result of oil spillage occasioned by the activities of foremost multinational, Shell Bp.  Even as his death is being commemorated, this is a clarion call to the Government to ensure the implementation of the report on the clean up of Ogoni Land.

HAMEED ALI TALKS TOUGH; I WILL MAKE SURE CORRUPT CUSTOMS OFFICERS GO ON TEN YEAR JAIL TERMS. The Comptroller General of Customs, Hameed Ali, on Tuesday warned that any customs officer caught involved in corrupt practice, would serve the maximum 10-year jail term prescribed by law. Mr. Ali gave the warning in Sokoto when he addressed customs officers of Sokoto/Zamfara/Kebbi Area Command. “The minimum jail term for corrupt officers is five years, but I will make sure that any officer found to be corrupt gets the maximum jail term of 10 years. “This is to serve as a deterrent to any officer who finds himself in the Customs to make money and not to earn money . “I am not saying that there are no good, incorruptible officers in the service, but there are few bad eggs who are giving the service a bad name,” Mr. Ali said. The CGC also cautioned the officials against indiscipline and living above their means. “Our work ethics must change to be in tune with the change mantr

Suswam arraigned, granted 100M Naira Bail.                                                                                                            photo credit:nairaland.com through google. A Federal High Court sitting in Abuja has granted bail to a former governor of Benue State, Gabriel Suswam, but ordered he be held by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, till he fulfils his bail conditions. Mr. Suswam was arraigned on Tuesday before the court on allegation of corruption. The former governor and his commissioner for finance, Omadaki Oklobia, are being charged by the EFCC. The two defendants pleaded not guilty to the nine count charges of fraud and financial misappropriation levelled against them. The charges border on Section 15(2, 3) of the Money Laundering Act (2011). After the charges were read, the prosecution counsel, Rotimi Jacobs, stated that he did not object to the application for bail requested by the defence counsel, Ahmed Raji.

BACK ON A SACKING SPREE; BUHARI SACKS ABOUT 17 PERMANENT SECRETARIES: President Muhammadu Buhari, a few hours ago, dismissed about 17 Permanent Secretaries. The decision was made known to the Permanent Secretaries in a meeting with the President at the Presidential villa. This latest set of dismissals comes a day before ministers of the Federal Republic of Nigeria are inaugurated, and analysts say it's part of the ongoing efforts to restructure the Government.

STILL ON THAT EPIC TARABA TRIBUNAL RULING: Apart from being a symapthiser of the All Progressives Congress, APC, I am also an individual who has a great passion for the rule of law and these factors alone make the outcome of the Taraba State Election Petition Tribunal a very interesting one for me. First, as an APC sympathizer, I'm more than happy to see PDP suffer for their own illegalities and 16 years of misrule by any means possible, and as such, even without recourse to the ratio for the decision in the Taraba case, I'm super excited. More seriously, as a law student, it is one more lesson learnt, and a confirmation of the popular maxim or quote that you can't build something on nothing.   At first, when my father told me the "good news" of the annulment of the Taraba polls by the tribunal, I was a bit indifferent because for me, Taraba is a PDP state and if a re run is ordered, the party would still coast home to victory. Well, my indifference

BAKARE DEFENDS BUHARI ADMINISTRATION: Pastor Tunde Bakare, of the Latter Rain Assembly, Dr. Tunde Bakare, says the government of President Muhammadu Buhari can only be described as ‘helpless’ not ‘clueless’. Speaking on Channels Television on Sunday, Bakare also weighed-in on the ministerial appointment of the President. The cleric defended Buhari’s selection, insinuating that they were based on competence and loyalty. On Boko Haram, Bakare said: “President Buhari’s administration is not clueless but helpless on the issue of insecurity. He met with neighbouring countries, changed service chiefs and formed ties with the leaders of the Western nations to seek their support in tackling insurgency. That is why we must all rise up to support his administration.” “Buhari took his time to choose the ministers. If anyone says they are not the best or competent, the person should tell me the charges against them in court. Are those nominated competent? Are they Nigerians? I kn

Governors of Ebonyi, Akwa-Ibom, Kogi, Yobe, Zamfara rated worst performing for the month of October: I don't know about other states but there is no way my Governor is not among the best performing Governors in the country....The Streetlights, the fly over, the repairs on the roads...His only blemish is as it relates to non payment of salaries sha....(my opinion) If the latest ratings by the CIAPS Governors Performance Index(CGPI) are anything to go by, then, the Governors of Ebonyi, Yobe, Kogi, Zamfara and Akwa-Ibom certainly have their works cut out as they have been rated as Nigeria's least performing Governors for the year of October.                         In a statement released by the CGPI coordinator, Mr Olumuyiwa Ayoola explained that the variables used as indexes for performance were mathematically calculated and this month's variables have been skewed to place emphasis on payment of salary, new projects,Education, Security and Leadership by Example.

KLOPP SUFFERS FIRST LIVERPOOL DEFEAT AS GIBBS SALVAGES POINT FOR GUNNERS: It was an afternoon to forget for Jurgen Klopp as he tasted his first defeat as Liverpool coach in his team's 2-1 loss to Crystal Palace at Anfield. In the game, Palace started the better of the two sides as the took the lead through a Yannick Bolasie opener. However, Parity was restored through an equalizer towards half time by Phillipe Coutinho. Sadly, it was not to be Liverpool's day as Palace took the lead in the 82nd minute through a goal from S. Dann. Meanwhile, in the eagerly anticipated London Derby between Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspurs, Arsenal managed to salvage a point through Kieran Gibbs' late equalizer after a series of missed opportunities by Olivier Giroud with Harry Kane having given Spurs the lead earlier in the first half.  In other parts of Europe, Barcelona banished any thoughts of 'messidependncia' with a commanding three-nil thumping of erstwhile title rivals

ENYIMBA ARE NPL CHAMPIONS AS TP MAZEMBE ARE CROWNED AFRICAN CLUB CHAMPIONS: Enyimba International of Aba, this evening emerged as Champions of the Nigerian Professional Football League for a record seventh time. Enymba's status was confirmed by a goaless draw at home to Warri Wolves, who before the match stood a slim chance of winning the trophy. Though the League is yet to draw to a close, Enyimba's 67 points from 37 matches gives them an unassailable lead over their closest rivals. Prior to now, Enyimba have won the trophy in 2001, 2002, 2003, 2005, 2007 and 2010. Meanwhile, in the CAF Champions League, TP MAZEMBE of Congo cemented their place in the World Club Cup by virtue of their triumph in Africa's premier Club Football Competition. They achieved this feat courtesy of a Two-nil second leg victory and 4-1 aggregate victory over USM Alger of Algeria. This victory secures Mazembe's place in the FIFA Club World Cup to be played in December, in

That Marriage Ish: It's probably my Grand Ma's favourite topic, and it's perhaps a topic I am not fully capable of delving into but worefa, I will try. From what I know, or what I have heard, Marriage is a beautiful thing but like every other beautiful thing, our society has bastardized and abused it. Don't get me wrong because I'm not talking about the 'desecration' of the marriage institution occasioned by high divorce rates. No, I'm actually more interested in addressing the over importance placed on marriage by the society; ask Linda. Personally, I find it almost disgusting that we allude completeness to marriage, and as such, no matter how much a person achieves, if he(or she) is not married, we all assume that such a person is still deficient in terms of accomplishments. To be more precise, this problem is easily relatable to by females because perhaps, we are still in a society that places women at the background. Imagine how

Quality At City Better Than Liverpool: In what would appear as a veiled attack on his former Club, Manchester City Winger, Raheem Sterling has stated that the quality of training at new Club, City dwarfs what he was used to in the five years he spent at Liverpool. Speaking with Manchester Evening News, Sterling stated that City had more experienced players than Liverpool;  "Obviously, Liverpool had many great players as well but the players here have been at the highest level for many years and you can definitely see that on the training pitch. The tempo, the passing, the two-touch movement in training; it's really surprised me. It's really sharp, really good to be involved in". Sterling scored his first Champions League goal for City in their 3-1 victory over Sevilla on Tuesday, which he acknowledged was a moment to savour as his side booked their place in the last 16 of the Champions League.

When You Fight With Pigs, You get Dirty and The Pigs are Happy..... Nothing best explains the travails of Leo Ekpenyong, the Abuja based Lawyer who in a series of petitions accused former Governor of Akwa Ibom and Senate Minority Leader, Obot Godswill Akpabio of corruptly enriching himself. Leo Ekpenyong was arraigned by the Police at the High Court in Gudu District in Abuja, today over allegations he made against the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, while appearing on an African Independent Television late night show. It would be recalled that a few weeks back, Ekpenyong accused the commission of intimidating him and also of complacency in handling the petition he brought against Akpabio. He equally stated that the Commission's invitation to Akpabio was a haux as they gave him a template and directives on how to write his statement. Mr Ekpenyong questioned the integrity of the EFCC leadership and also their commitment to the anti-corruption fight.

Naira Value drops as BVN paralyses Foreign Exchange Market. Activities at the retail segment of the official foreign exchange market were grounded, yesterday, as end users avoided bureaux de change (BDCs), to avoid submitting their Biometric Verification Number (BVN) for foreign exchange transactions. This, however, resulted in sharp increase in demand for dollars at the black market, prompting the naira to depreciate to N230 per dollar from N225. Recall that the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) made the BVN a criteria for sale and purchase of foreign exchange by banks and bureaux de change (BDCs) effective November 1. Vanguard investigation, however, revealed that instead of foreign exchange end users submitting their BVN to BDCs as mandated by the CBN, most of them moved to the black market for their foreign exchange needs. This in turn increased demand in the market, prompting the parallel market exchange rate to rise to N230 per dollar from N225 at the close of busines

What manner of solidarity is this at the expense of duty? For the second time in what has become an ugly trend, the Senate of The National Assembly was shut down as Senators abandoned the Senate Chambers in order to accompany Senate President President, Bukola Saraki to the Code Of Conduct Tribunals. It would be recalled that about 13 days ago, The Senate was closed down in similar fashion in order to accompany Saraki to the tribunal. Saraki is standing trial at the Code of Conduct Tribunal for alleged discrepancies in his asset declaration, which he vehemently denies and continues to attribute his trial to a witch-hunt against him. At the Tribunal, Saraki's Legal team argued that the Tribunal should stay proceedings pending the determination of their appeal challenging the Tribunal's jurisdiction at the Supreme Court. On the other hand, Prosecution Counsel, Rotimi Jacobs argued that there was an appeal court decision which was to the effect that the Tribunal'

Some Ministers will not have Por tfolios; President Buhari. Well, before I let you read. I guess its apt for me to air my legal opinion on this one; Like someone rightly argued, the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria in S.147(1) clearly states that "There shall be such OFFICES as ministers of the Government of the federation as may be established by the President". For me, the highlighted says it all; the office the minister is assigned to handle is his portfolio, and this is constitutionally guaranteed. This section does not say "there will be a person who will be called minister". The section as a whole clearly talks about the office of minister to be ran by the person of a minister.  I mean, what is the essence of having a minister without an office? Man, that's childish. Any attempt to have some ministers without any portfolio is placing the Government at the risk of litigation. President Buhari has restated his earlier

Trouble in Paradise? Once upon a time, there was no Paul without Peter, and vice versa but today, times have changed as Africa's biggest musical duo and Nigeria's twin sensation, Psquare appear ex facie  to have gone their separate ways, at least business wise. As if to confirm this worst kept secret in the Nigerian Music scene, Peter Okoye, the other half of the group, Psquare today bagged another solo endorsement with German sportswear corporation, Adidas. It would be recalled that Peter has also within the past one year bagged a couple of solo deals without his twin brother, amongst which include the deal with Olympic milk as well as his dance show, "Dance with Peter".

Boko Haram's intelligence gathering is more efficient than Nigeria's Respected Nigerian Civil war hero and elder statesman, Rtd. Lt. General Theophilus Yakubu Danjuma has emphatically declared that when it comes to intelligence gathering, dreaded insurgent group, Boko Haram trumps the capabilities of the Nigerian Army. Danjuma stated that the insurgents have sleeper-cells within the civilian populace, hence, their edge over the Nigerian Army. The former Army Chief also said that Boko Haram's new strategy of attacking soft targets is yielding the desired results for them because their agents within civilians have the opportunity of carrying out surveillance and gathering intelligence. He made this latest observation while commissioning the new secretariat built by the catholic diocese of Sokoto by Bishop Matthew Hassan Kukah, on Tuesday.

Tribunal Upholds Ikpeazu's Election: After a rather contentious litigation process, the Abia State Election Petition Tribunal sitting in Abuja, has upheld the election of the Peoples Democtatic Party(PDP) candidate, Dr Okechukwu Ikpeazu in the April,11 Governorship election that was held in the state. The Tribunal dismissed the petition brought before it by The Candidate of The All Progressives Grand Alliance, Dr Alex Otti for lacking merit. The judgement will certainly not bring joy to numerous supporters of Otti who believed that their candidate was the rightful winner of the election. However, it is expected that the petitioner will exhaust all options provided by the law in his quest to become Abia State Governor.

At Least, I know when my father will be paid: After a few days of uncertainty, Federal Government workers will start to receive their October Salaries from today, 3rd November. The delay in the payment of October Salaries was as a result of technical hitches according to Presidential Spokesman, Garba Shehu. In the statement released by Mallam Shehu, "the President is seriously concerned about the ordeals of civil servants on the account of unpaid salaries". Speaking further, Shehu stated that empathy to the plight of Nigerians would be a guiding light in the administration of President Buhari.

Nigeria Needs 237,000 Medical Doctors but has only 35,000: Nigeria needs no fewer than 237,000 medical doctors to meet World Health Organisation (WHO) standard, a professor of medicine and chairman, Association of Colleges of Medicine of Nigeria, Folashade Ogunsola, has said. Mrs. Ogunsola disclosed this at the opening of a three-day Capacity Development Programme for Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) Academic Staff in Nigerian Universities organised by National Universities Commission on Monday in Abuja. According to her, WHO’s ratio for any country to have enough doctors for its population is 1:600 (one doctor of every 600 persons). “We will need about 237, 000 medical doctors and we have about 35,000 working in the country today. “We have trained more than that, many of them have left the country while many others are in different professions — banking, music and so on. “Medicine is about life; it is the duty of the medical schools to produce people
