The Rivers state governorship election ‎petition tribunal sitting in Abuja has nullified the election of Nyesom Wike as governor of the state. The tribunal ordered the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to conduct a fresh governorship election in the state.
This is coming a few days after the Akwa Ibom State election petition tribunal cancelled elections in 18 out of 31 Local Government Areas in the state.
This latest development appears to confirm hitherto held views by many individuals that the elections in Rivers was marred by a lot of irregularities.
On the other hand, the opposition All Progressives Congress says it has welcomed the judgement of the State Governorship Election Petition Tribunal.
In a statement signed by the Party Chairman in the State, Dr Davies Ibiamu Ikanya, “We have been vindicated in our persistent claim that the election in Rivers State was a sham and that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) erred in declaring Wike governor. We repeat that there is no way under the heavens that Chief Wike can beat our candidate, Dr. Dakuku Peterside, in a free and fair election,”.
